1. Criminal Detective Kurt Wallander in Henning Mankell's Faceless Killers
This paper studies the issue of xenophobia in the Swedish context, and how it affects the protagonist of the novel, criminal detective Kurt Wallander.
About Kurt Wallander, Barry Forshaw, in “The Cracks Appear: Henning Mankell”, notes that Mankell’s dyspeptic detective is one of the “signal creations of contemporary crime fiction: out of condition, diabetes-suffering and with all the headaches of modern society leaving scars on his soul” (Forshaw 2012, 21). Furthermore, regarding Wallander, Shane McCorristine, in “The Place of Pessimism in Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander Series”, writes, “The figure of Wallander was created, therefore, out of an ideological urge, as an agent of criticism with which Mankell could probe Swedish attitudes towards the place of non-Swedes and thereby diagnose the broader path of Swedish society with the aid of a hard-boiled and frequently cynical foil” (McCorristine 2011, 78). Interestingly, while quoting Lundin’s idea of ‘Ulcer School’, Katarina Gregersdotter observes that a specific sub-genre of Swedish crime fiction has been termed ‘Ulcer School’ which suggests that the concerned police investigators are physically and psychologically affected by the society. She considers Kurt Wallander as one of the representatives of the ‘Ulcer School’ and adds that “he could be seen as a typical workaholic, but his never-ending internal monologue concerning the state (and health) of society taken together with his physique invites the interpretation that his body can be seen as a metaphor for the society in which he lives and works” (Gregersdotter 2013, 84). Lastly, commenting on the geospatial setting o...

3. The Translation of Dialects in Multimedia > Manslaughter or murder
In this paper I discuss the subtitling of crime-related utterances in the Swedish crime film Before the Frost (Innan frosten 2005).
This paper explores the subtitling in the Swedish crime film Before the Frost (Innan frosten 2005), partly based on my pilot study (Kerkkä, 2007), which was the first step on my way towards a PhD. More specifically, the paper concentrates on crime-related utterances in the original Swedish dialogue in the film and their translations, ie. subtitles in Finnish, Norwegian and Danish. The paper presents some of the changes which have occurred during the translation process, illustrated with examples, concerning the variation in the subtitles of crime-related utterances and discusses how this variation has been transferred to the subtitles. In addition, there will be a discussion about crime-related utterances with no change compared to the original dialogue in the film and also about possible reasons why the crime-related utterances seem to remain the same in the subtitle as in the original dialogue in the film.

Barry Forshaw is the author of The Man Who Left Too Soon: The Life and Works of Stieg Larsson (2010) and Death in a Cold Climate: A Guide to Scandinavian Crime Fiction (2012). In a review article in this journal (2013), I concluded with regard to Death in a Cold Climate that while it was a useful and often insightful guide, it suffered from a tendency to digress and to pad the writing with lengthy and often irrelevant quotations from authors, translators, and publishers (Lingard 184), and too great a concentration on Swedish writers at the expense of their colleagues in the other Nordic countries. Nordic Noir offers a quantum leap in organization and balance. Forshaw still uses quotations, mainly from authors and translators, but these are always to the point, and many are from personal interviews and conversations that provide a welcome sense of immediacy to the reader. Similarly there is a fairer balance among the five Nordic countries, including the Faroe Islands, in political terms Danish, but with a literary tradition of their own, most notably in the novels of William Heinesen, whose De fortabte spillemænd (1950) [The Lost Musicians 1971] is to my mind a masterpiece of magic realism.

A current fault line in the study of crime fiction as a transnational genre is to what extent crime novels offer readers genuine cosmopolitan windows onto other worlds and cultures or whether it simply is bound to reproduce trite imagologies and national stereotypes. The overarching premise for this article is to explore the extent to which Henning Mankell's crime novels and their adaptations engage the character Wallander's own and “other” worlds with a cosmopolitan perspective, by considering the mutations of Wallander's fictional local world as intricately tied to discursive geopolitical realities of the post–Cold War world. More specifically, I consider what may be gained from exploring the Wallander series within two distinct – yet, I shall argue, related – perspectives on geopolitics and crime fiction: on the one hand, the geopolitics of the translation, adaptation, and reception networks that have “worlded” the Wallander series (what I call Wallander's geopolitical adaptation networks), and on the other, the fictional geopolitical networks that weave the Global North and the Global South together in several of Mankell's intricate crime plots (Wallander's dark geopolitics).

In this paper, 32 books by the Swedish writer Henning Mankell were investigated using stylometric methods, to find out whether his style varies in different genres, if his style changed measurably over time, or if his books differ from each other stylistically for other reasons. The results show that the time of publication can play a role, but that other factors, such as dominant verb tense used and narrative perspective, as well as register, are more important in determining whether and how the style of novels differs. This study also gives more insight into frequently used methods in stylometry, such as cluster analysis and PCA, that give little information about the stylistic features that differ between texts. For this purpose, the original Swedish texts were also compared to the Dutch translations of the same texts to determine how translation and language influence the results of stylometric analyses.
